NEW RICHMOND -- Charles (Cris) Martin, 87, who was a Montgomery County commissioner from 1951-57, died at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette Saturday at 3:30 p.m. after a stay of two and a half days. A farmer who lived most of his life in the New Richmond and Romney areas, he was educated in Tippecanoe County schools. He was born Nov. 29. 1877, in Missouri to David and Caroline Martin. He was married to Grace Greenburg in 1906. She died in 1939. Mr. Martin was a member of the New Richmond Methodist Church, the New Richmond Masonic Lodge, Shrine, York Rite at Lafayette, Knights Templar at Lafayette and the New Richmond Cemetery Association. Survivors include a granddaughter, Mrs. Nancy Smith of Mississippi; a brother, Walter of near Crawfordsville and a great-granddaughter, Miss Cynthia K. Smith of Mississippi. He was preceded in death, in addition to his wife, by a daughter, three brothers and four sisters. Services were held at 2 p.m.. Tuesday at the Helms Funeral Chapel at Linden. Rev. H. Earl Moore officiated. Burial was in the New Richmond Cemetery.
NEW RICHMOND — Charles (Cris) Martin, 87, died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, where he had been a patient for 2 1/2 days. He was born in Missouri, but had spent most of his life in the New Richmond and Romney communities. He attended Mentone School in Tippecanoe County, and was a farmer. He married Grace Greenburg in 1906. She died in 1939. Mr. Martin was a member of the New Richmond Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge No. 604 in New Richmond, Shrine, York Rite and Lafayette Commandery 3, Knights Templar. He served as Montgomery County Commissioner from 1951 to 1957. He is survived by a brother, Walter N. Martin of Crawfordsville.
LINDEN --- Funeral services were held for Charles L. (Chris) Martin at the Helms Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. H. Earl Moore of Lafayette officiating. Mrs. Frank Royer, organist, played the requested selections "The Old Rugged Cross," "Beyond the Sunset" and "Sunrise Tomorrow." Pallbearers were Garland Oppy, David Oppy and Robert Thayer of New Richmond, Henry Sparks, Wingate, Timothy Guard, Linden, and Curtis Perkins of Romney. Interment was in New Richmond Cemetery. Masonic services were conducted Monday night by the New Richmond Lodge 604. Officers present were Ben Miller, Robert Fyffe, Maynard Spence, William Snellenbarger, Delbert E. Holt, C. W. Banta, Fredrick Payne and Timothy Guard with Roy Meharry acting as worshipful master. Chris Martin was a farmer in the New Richmond community and had served two terms as a Montgomery County commissioner.
